Each year the Trøndelagsutstillingen offers a unique insight into contemporary Norwegian art. The exhibition brings together a diversity of artistic practices and modes of expression in a broad showcase of Norwegian artists, celebrating a glimpse of what the rich art scene in Trøndelag has to offer.

Trøndelag Bildende Kunstnere (TBK) and Trøndelag Centre for Contemporary Art (TSSK) are pleased to welcome the public to the opening of the 49th Trøndelagsutstillingen on Saturday, August 23 at 12:00 at the Trøndelag Centre for Contemporary Art in Trondheim.

The Trøndelagsutstillingen art prizes will be awarded at the opening. NTNU’s Art Prize will be presented by Jakob Jessen, Head of the Trondheim Academy of Fine Art – NTNU. The Debutant Prize will be presented by Mishi Foltyn, Chair of Trøndelag Visual Artists, and we have invited art critic Stian Gabrielsen to present the prestigious Critics’ Award of NOK 50,000.

29 artworks by 27 artists
As it approaches its 50th anniversary, Trøndelagsutstillingen continues to be an important platform for artistic freedom of expression and artist-led dissemination in the region. This year’s exhibition embraces a wide variety of works and artistic expressions – ranging from the contemplative and poetic to the political and socially engaged.

Several of the participating artists have a strong material-based approach, where traditional craftsmanship meets explorations of subjects that many today find urgent: environmental destruction and human intervention in nature, cultural loss, displacement and fragmentation of lives, and how people and cultures adapt and preserve coherence under pressure. The jury has selected works that engage with the crises of our time, as well as art that addresses timeless existential questions – together forming a compelling portrait of contemporary art in Norway and the Trøndelag region.

As one of Norway’s five regional exhibitions, Trøndelagsutstillingen is a juried group exhibition based on an open call for visual art, where all artists with ties to Trøndelag may apply to participate. This year, the jury has selected 29 artworks by 27 artists.

Awarding of the art prizes
There is great anticipation surrounding the four art prizes of Trøndelagsutstillingen, three of which will be awarded on the exhibition’s opening day.

The Critics’ Award of NOK 50,000 is given to an artist whose work stands out in terms of quality. The award has been made possible through a collaboration with Kjell Erik Killi Olsen. This year, it will be presented by art critic, writer, and editor Stian Gabrielsen, the Norwegian editor of Kunstkritikk.no.

NTNU’s Art Prize, amounting to NOK 20,000, is awarded to one of the participants with an educational background from NTNU. The prize highlights the important interaction between the university and the art community in Trondheim. This year it will be presented by Jakob Jessen, Head of the Trondheim Academy of Fine Art.

The Debutant Prize highlights emerging artistic practices. The recipient will receive NOK 10,000, generously sponsored by Østerlie Kunst og Farge AS. This year, there are five debutants in the exhibition, and the prize will be awarded by Mishi Foltyn, Chair of Trøndelag Bildende Kunstnere (TBK).
