In her work with ceramic sculptures and installations, artist Moa Håkansson explores a universe of abstract, partly anthropomorphic forms. These emerge as beings – sensing, communicating, and acting – and together they create narrative connections.

Trøndelag Centre for Contemporary Art is pleased to present Moa Håkansson’s first major solo exhibition in Trondheim. The artist’s practice is rooted in psychology, biology, and existential questions. She investigates emotions, inner conflicts, striving, growth, and human interaction, with a particular focus on life’s fundamental contradictions: the desire for both freedom and safety, individuality and community, construction and destruction. A central question in her work is: What is a human being?

Her working process is organic and characterized by intuition and a close relationship with the material, leaving distinct traces in the finished sculptures. Håkansson employs coil and slab techniques and paints with colored liquid clay (slip). She creates visual and tactile surface effects using both metal tools and her hands, and some of the works are glazed. The ceramic pieces are at times combined with materials such as wood or textile.

Moa Håkansson presents an entirely new series of sculptures in which she continues to build on previous projects and explorations
Moa Håkansson (b. 1987, Sweden) lives and works in Oslo. She holds an MFA from the Oslo National Academy of the Arts, Department of Art and Craft (KHiO, 2016), where she now teaches as an associate professor. Håkansson has held solo exhibitions at Buskerud Kunstsenter in Drammen (2024), Galleri Format in Oslo (2021), and Nääs Konsthantverk in Floda (2019), as well as numerous group exhibitions in Norway and abroad. She recently participated in MATER – Hannah Ryggen Triennial 2025 at Nordenfjeldske Kunstindustrimuseum and in KUNST·HÅND·VERK at the National Museum in Oslo. Her works are included in the collections of the National Museum, KODE, and the Nordenfjeldske Museum of Decorative Arts and Design.
