In her solo exhibition "Timeblomster", ceramist Kristin Opem presents a series of handmade glazed ceramic objects.
In her solo exhibition Timeblomster, ceramist Kristin Opem presents a series of handmade glazed ceramic objects. Opem has for years worked with the potter wheel for creating her jars in stoneware. Opem describes the artistic production as transcendent – in the end, the jar becomes a distinctive being with integrity. Time is crucial; the soft clay demands one’s full attention. When the process is successful, the final object holds its kind of presence.
Opem uses stoneware and fire oxidizing to 1 245 degrees Celsius. She applies several layers of glaze to bring out life and tension in the colors and surfaces of the objects.
The artist has great respect for her predecessors in the field of ceramics. She uses what she needs from tradition, sometimes consciously and sometimes unconsciously. The organic forms that appear often have a large relationship with the forms found in nature.
Opem spent one year of her studies in Iceland, which would prove to be of crucial importance to her.
The exhibition's title Timeblomster has Kristin Opem taken from the children's novel Momo, the strange story of the time-thieves and the child who brought the stolen time back to the people by German author Michael Ende.
I'm in a tradition. A wide range of practitioners, backwards in time. Hands that no longer exist, shaped and burned clay: Sculptures of small, fat goddesses in museums. A pot without a handle. A piece of stoneware. Through the things they created, their hands reach out to mine.
I'm in a contemporary age. It encircles me, stretches out on all sides, does not leave me alone. Bus travel, art, politicians, my fellow human beings. And an empty stomach.
Kristin Opem (b. 1963) lives and works in Klæbu, Trøndelag. She has studied at the Department of Ceramics at The National College of Art and Craft in Oslo, and the Icelandic College of Art and Crafts. Kristin Opem has been represented with exhibitions both nationally and internationally. The exhibition "Timeblomster" is supported by the Arts Council Norway's Government Grants for Artists.
