Hans Kristian Borchgrevink Hansen works with drawing, objects, animation, and artist books. In his projects, he often explores his immediate surroundings. He proceeds cautiously, takes the motifs seriously, and endeavors to give them the attention they deserve.
In his solo exhibition 'LØSØRE' at the Trøndelag Centre for Contemporary Art from November 16th to December 17th, Hansen will present the film “Småfuglen letter” (2019) (The Little Bird Takes Flight) in a large format, along with around 80 small sculptures and objects.
The film is based on the artist's stay at the small farm and artist residence Ringsveen, where Hansen and the artist Ellen Henriette Suhrke spent a year from 2016 to 2017. Ringsveen became known to the public when Anne and Jakob Weidemann settled there in 1967, and therefore, the small farm outside Lillehammer holds a special place in Norwegian art history. Jakob Weidemann painted several of his most famous pictures at Ringsveen.
At the same time, in his film, Hansen portrays Ringsveen as any ordinary home. Jakob and Anne become protagonists in the film on an equal footing with other participants, such as the squirrel, the bread dough, the afternoon sun, the farmyard tree, and the online banking token. The film blends animation and video, present and history, into a fluid video mass of observations and passing seasons.
Weidemann found his motifs among wildflowers in the courtyard. Similarly, Hans Kristian Borchgrevink Hansen has explored the same local environment and discovered his own motif. Dust particles, a carved wooden horse, or a ketchup bottle are carefully brought to life by Hansen through meticulous care for the objects and environments depicted.
The music for the film “Småfuglen letter” (The Little Bird Takes Flight) is composed by Øystein Wyller Odden, and author and art critic Bjørn Hatterud has written a text for the exhibition.

“Hans Kristian Borchgrevink Hansen and Ellen Henriette Suhrke moved to the Ringsveen farm in the fall of 2016 and stayed there until the following summer. The farm is situated up on a hillside, east of Lillehammer. On the right weather conditions, one can hear the bustling city in the distance.
The main building dates back to 1780, containing numerous traces and artifacts from past lives. Particularly, remnants from the last permanent residents of the farm, the artist Jakob Weidemann (1923-2001) and journalist and antique dealer Anne Weidemann (1921-2010). The couple purchased the farm in 1967. (…) Anne drove her car to and from the city, to work, and to be with people. Jakob stayed behind and painted. (…)
(---) At the same time, the exterior of the house is surrounded by this ever-circulating and vibrant nature that Jakob turned to in his artistic practice. Here are the rowan tree, squirrels, deer, and birds. Here is the autumn's dampness and the darkness and light of winter. The awakening of spring with a blooming forest floor. Around the house, one can see traces left by elk and deer. The hare hops and the fox scurries. Birds take flight from weathered stumps. New rounds of green vegetation grow around the house's timbered walls.
Moving into Ringsveen is like stepping into a time capsule, existing in harmony with the unhurried, cyclical rhythm of nature. Meanwhile, below, one catches a glimpse of the ceaseless bustle of the city – ever pressing forward!
Inspired by his stay at Ringsveen, Hans Kristian Borchgrevink Hansen has created a multitude of new artworks, a film, and several artifacts. These are items that appear to be as seemingly useless as the many remnants left by the Weidemanns at Ringsveen. In his film “Småguflene letter” (The Flight of the Small Birds), he meditates on the aesthetics, form, and materiality of Ringsveen. Nature assumes a role equivalent to historical objects. Objects he has retrieved from a drawer receive the same treatment as an animal track. A bird feeding receives the same level of concentration as the voices from the radio speaking into the room. Time ceases, time is captured, and time is abandoned. Time becomes a set of gears turning at different paces."
