As an artist, Borghild Rudjord Unneland works primaly with large art installations, and focus on the contrast within everyday situations.
In "Bevismaterialer” (Evidence Materials), she aims to 'prove' that spaces are never truly empty, and even fragments carry connections. The exhibition highlights the significance of small details, inviting viewers to reconsider familiar elements, such as everyday objects and empty spaces.
In addition to grid patterns on the walls and smaller objects on the floor and stands, the exhibition's largest artwork is designed as a large, movable mobile. With an extensive span of several meters, it hangs in the air from the art center's five-meter-high ceiling, filling parts of the foremost exhibition hall in the venue. Four objects hang from long metal weight bars: a writing desk, a chair, a shoe, and a casting of a hole. The various weight points of the objects challenge the balance of the artwork. It may challenge the visitors' desire to find an explanation for it all, and will most likely attempt to fill the space between the objects with meaning.
“When I was little, I had a blanket that my great-grandmother had made. She had knitted it from old unravelled yarn. What remains when something disappears is a question I have been preoccupied with for a long time. Physical and mental 'realities' that influence and merge into each other. I am fascinated by how one thought can lead to another and how stories and memories can make us see connections and draw conclusions. I am interested in the unique human ability to associate and thus create meaning and understanding about what we experience and see.
The starting point for the title "Evidence Materials" (also the title of the large mobile) is thoughts I had after reading the book "Det umätmbaras renässans" by the philosopher Jonna Bornemark. There is something about the 'immeasurable' that I have become very interested in. Everything that exists but is difficult to measure. I want to give the unknown significant space. Therefore, I let the exhibition grow with the observer's own resonance as a sounding board.”
Borghild Rudjord Unneland (b. 1978, Oslo) is based in Bergn, and educated at the Department of Textiles at the Bergen Academy of Art and Design. She has had several major solo exhibitions at Galleri Soft in Oslo, Kristiansand Kunsthall, among others, and participated in numerous group exhibitions nationally and internationally. Unneland's works are acquired by the Bergen Art Museum and the municipalities of Bergen, and she has undertaken several significant art projects as decorations for public buildings and outdoor spaces.
The artist has received support for the exhibition from the Bergen municipality.
