Introduction Course in Vidjespenning with Gunnar Wiger, 7. mars. (FULL)
I forbindelse med utstillingen «Brytningstid» med kunstner Veslemøy Lilleengen arrangerer vi et introduksjonskurs i vidjespenning med Gunnar Wiger.
Time: March 7, 12:00–15:00
Location: Trøndelag Centre for Contemporary Art
>>>The course has space for 10 participants and is unfortunately now fully booked!<<<
Before rope, cable ties and steel wire came into use, twisted and shaped birch withies (vidjer) were widely used for fastening and binding purposes — for carrying hay, making handles, snowshoe bindings, ski bindings, broom bindings, and for building wooden fences.
The material used is primarily fresh birch shoots. Birch is tough and flexible, especially when freshly cut, and root shoots are considered the best material. Historically, the material was freely available in nature, and the only essential tool needed is a knife.
Gunnar Wiger will provide a practical introduction to traditional vidjespenning — a technique used for making rope, locks, and fastening mechanisms. Participants will learn how to prepare fresh birch shoots through trimming, bark removal, twisting and shaping, and will create their own fastening from raw material to finished object.
We will work with birch shoots approximately 50–150 cm in length. Participants are welcome to bring their own birch shoots, but materials and tools are provided. The only thing you need to bring is a carving knife.
During the process, a knife is used for trimming and removing bark, and the material is secured in a vise before being twisted. The piece is measured and adjusted before being shaped and pressed to achieve a smooth and rounded finish.
Please note: This is not basket weaving or willow/wicker weaving. Vidjespenning is a traditional Norwegian binding technique using fresh birch branches to create strong, functional fastenings. The workshop involves working with a knife and requires some physical effort. It is intended for adults and focuses on traditional craft techniques rather than decorative weaving.
Wiger will also bring examples of traditional bindings and related handmade objects for those who may be interested in purchasing them.
The event will last approximately 2.5 hours.
